Sarah Markwardt grew up in Ohiopyle and recently graduated from Waynesburg University with a degree in International Studies and Biblical and Ministry Studies.  Sarah participated in the Best Semester – Latin American Studies Program in Costa Rica, but her heart is with the girls of Hekima Place, an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya.  She also served as a Bonner Scholar, as a member of the varsity soccer team and in the counseling services department at Waynesburg University.  Sarah worked with Hekima Place.

What is the best part about the PULSE experience?
The best part of PULSE is living in community together; being intentional about your relationships, making time for each other, learning how to manage your talents and time.

What does your ideal Saturday morning look like?
My ideal Saturday morning starts with pick-up soccer in Oakland and then a walk up and down the Strip District for some ethnic food

What is the best thing about your nonprofit placement?
Hekima Place is my second home.  The best part about working for Hekima is knowing that everything I do, I am doing so that my girls can go to school and have a better life.

What are some hobbies that you would like to pursue?
Now that college soccer is over, I want to continue exercising.  So, I’ve signed up to run the Pittsburgh Half Marathon!

What is a favorite cheap or free activity you’ve found in Pittsburgh?
Two of my favorite things to do in Pittsburgh are play pick-up soccer and go salsa dancing with Los Sabrosos.
